Synopsis

Following backlash from the tech industry, the government on March 16 issued a new advisory on AI models, doing away with some of the key requirements mentioned earlier. However, even as the general elections are approaching, lack of clarity over some of the guidelines continue to be a cause of concern for the industry and stakeholders.

The Indian government’s attempt to regulate Artificial Intelligence (AI) apparently hit a snag earlier this month with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) revoking the requirement of government approval before AI models under development are deployed for users on the Internet. In a late-night advisory on March 1, the ministry had mandated that all AI models, software using generative AI, and large language models
