UGC revamps curriculum: Higher institutions to offer enhanced employability and holistic growth through life skills

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced Life Skills courses as part of its Quality Mandate for students enrolled in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) at the undergraduate level. The aim is to equip students with vital soft skills that enhance employability and self-esteem. These skills cover communication, interpersonal relations, time management, teamwork, problem-solving, decision-making, leadership abilities, and universal values.
The curriculum is designed to incorporate active participation from both students and faculty. Activities like oral presentations, debates, team-building exercises, projects, and psychometric analysis are integrated into the courses. The programme’s objectives include fostering self-awareness, emotional competency, leadership behaviour, stress and time management, and human values.
The Life Skills programme offers several courses, including Communication Skills, Professional Skills, Leadership and Management Skills, and Universal Human Values. These courses collectively aim to enhance learners’ self-competency, emotional competency, intellectual competency, professional competency, social competency, and holistic development.
In the ‘Communication Skills’ course, students delve into various facets of effective communication, covering listening, speaking, reading, writing (including different writing modes), digital literacy, social media usage, digital ethics, cyber security, and nonverbal communication. This 2-credit point course spans 30 hours, providing students with a well-rounded communication skill set essential for personal and professional growth.
The ‘Professional Skills’ course is divided into ‘Career Skills’ and ‘Team Skills,’ each offering 2 credit points and spanning 30 hours in total. ‘Career Skills’ focuses on résumé building, interview techniques, group discussion proficiency, and exploring career opportunities. ‘Team Skills’ delves into cognitive and non-cognitive skills like presentation expertise, trust-building, effective listening within a team, brainstorming, social and cultural etiquette, and internal communication. This comprehensive course prepares students for individual career growth and effective collaboration within a team setting.
The ‘Leadership and Management Skills’ course offers 2 credit points over 30 hours and covers leadership, managerial abilities, entrepreneurial skills, innovative leadership, design thinking, ethics, integrity, and personal finance management. This comprehensive curriculum equips students with essential skills for effective leadership and management in various contexts.
The ‘Universal Human Values’ course spans 30 hours and covers love, compassion, truth, non-violence, righteousness, peace, service, renunciation, constitutional values, justice, and human rights. This course fosters a deep understanding of the core values necessary for creating a just, peaceful, and compassionate society.
These Life Skills courses align with the UGC’s commitment to holistic education and the NEP 2020’s emphasis on well-rounded learning experiences. They empower students to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and contribute positively to personal, professional, and social growth.
