BHUBANESWAR: Authorities of universities in the state welcomed the suggestion of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to consider using ceremonial robes made out of handloom fabrics for special occasions like convocation. Some of the universities in Odisha are already using handlooms for making college uniforms for undergraduate students.
“It is noted that some universities have still not changed their ceremonial dress code during the convocation. It is again requested that the universities consider switching to handloom fabrics as ceremonial dress,” said the UGC in its letter to the vice-chancellors of universities.
The UGC further stated that the use of handloom fabrics would not only instil a sense of pride in being Indian but also promote the handloom industry in the country, which provides employment opportunities to many people living in rural areas.
Santosh Kumar Tripathy, vice-chancellor of Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, while welcoming the UGC suggestion said teachers and staff of the university are wearing handlooms on every Friday. “We will follow the UGC suggestion and use handloom in future functions,” he added.
Sambalpur University vice-chancellor Bidhu Bhusan Mishra welcomed the suggestion and said they will follow this in the coming convocation and other functions. “Sambalpur is famous for its handloom. Without passing instructions even students are coming to colleges and universities by wearing handloom,” he added.
Umaballava Mohapatra, vice-chancellor of Rajendra University Balangir, said undergraduate and postgraduate students at the university are wearing uniforms made up of handloom. “We welcome the decision of the UGC,” he added.
Aparajita Chowdhury, vice-chancellor of Rama Devi Women’s University, Bhubaneswar, said they will follow the UGC suggestion for the coming function. “We can follow it to use handloom in convocation after getting approval from the governor’s office,” she added.
Several state public universities and degree colleges are already promoting handloom by using it for making uniforms of UG and PG students. Even some institutions wear handlooms on Fridays and at special occasions.
