Saturday’s Soweto derby hogged the headlines – and rightly so – as Orlando Pirates came from behind not once, but twice, to complete a 2023/2024 league ‘double’ over rivals Kaizer Chiefs.
Orlando Pirates’ three points could well go a long way to determining which of the Soweto giants finishes the season higher in the standings.
The Buccaneers now find themselves in second place in the standings with just 10 matches remaining.
They boast 33 points from 20 matches, and while they are a yawning 12 points adrift of log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns (and have played three more matches), a CAF Champions League spot is on the cards for the Jose Riveiro’s men.
Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs are down in seventh place with 29 points from 20 games played and will be looking over their shoulder as they try hold onto a MTN8 place next season.
In other DStv Premiership matches played over the weekend, Stellenbosch FC and Cape Town Spurs played to a 1-1 draw in their Cape derby, and that was the same scoreline in the SuperSport United v AmaZulu clash.
A 10-man Swallows side went down 4-1 at home against Sekhuhune United, while Mamelodi Sundowns were too good for Chippa United, winning 2-0.
Richards Bay and TS Galaxy played to a goalless draw in Saturday’s other match.
On Sunday, Golden Arrows picked up three points on the road winning 1-0 against Polokwane City, while Royal AM pulled off something of a surprise, beating Cape Town City FC 2-0.
