CELTIC fans erupted in a derogatory x-rated chant aimed at Peter Lawwell after the full-time whistle of their shock draw at home to Kilmarnock.
The Hoops dropped two valuable points at Celtic Park against Derek McInnes’ inspired Ayrshiremen, handing Rangers the advantage in the title race.
The Green Brigade unveiled a banner in support of Palestine before kick-off that had fans singing a chorus of the Irish song Grace in unison.
But just over 90 minutes later large sections of what was left inside the ground were united in a totally different chant.
Video footage has emerged of punters shouting “Lawwell, get to f***, Lawwell, Lawwell, get to f***”, just before John Beaton blew for full-time and as Killie began to celebrate a precious point at Parkhead.
Brendan Rodgers also hasn’t been immune from criticism, with some fans even replacing “Lawwell” with “Rodgers”.
The Celtic boss said after the game that he understood and sympathised with the supporters.
He said: “It looked like we might get away with it and it would have been a good result on the back of a poor performance. But we didn’t and we lacked authority, composure, all the things you need to control a game.
“We looked nervous on the ball and created nowhere near what we’d wanted to. Obviously there was anxiety in the stadium but that’s got nothing to do with the supporters, they got behind us.
“This is on us and we have to accept it’s a poor performance. I can understand the criticism. Whatever comes our way, we’ll deserve it.
I feel for the supporters. I’ve told the players, kids have travelled from all over the country to see their heroes today but that wouldn’t have inspired them. It wasn’t anywhere near the level that we want and we have to accept that.”
On the title race with Rangers, Rodgers expanded: “There’s still a long way to go and I’m sure it will to and fro until the very last game.
“I can totally get the reaction of the supporters. Even at 1-0 they won’t have been happy with that performance.
“To draw 1-1 I can totally get it. We’ll be doing everything we possibly can to get the team into a better place for a positive result.
“I like a challenge. I have had to fight al my career and this is another great challnege.
“It’s going to be tight but for me we’ll get away have a positive week and see where we can be better and take that into the next game.”
