Officials in Camden County, Georgia have released dash cam video capturing the encounter between Leonard Cure and a sheriff’s deputy moments before Cure was fatally shot during a traffic stop. The video shows Cure exiting his pickup truck before being shot by the deputy. Cure, 53, was stopped on Monday on Interstate 95 after his speeding pickup was spotted. He had recently been released from a Florida prison after being wrongly incarcerated for a drug store arrest in 2003. Cure had been speeding and faced arrest for reckless driving. The video shows the deputy shouting at Cure to step out of his vehicle and put his hands behind his back. Cure and the deputy exchanged words before a scuffle ensued, leading to Cure being shot by the deputy. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the video, along with other evidence, before sending its findings to prosecutors. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Cure’s family, wants to see additional video footage that Cure allegedly started livestreaming during the initial traffic stop. Cure had been working to rebuild his life after being wrongfully convicted and imprisoned for armed robbery. He had given inspirational talks to students and was considering college. Studies show that Black Americans face a disproportionate risk of wrongful convictions and police violence. Cure’s case highlights the anxiety faced by those wrongfully imprisoned when interacting with law enforcement. Other exonerees have expressed similar fears.
