Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs contest yet another Soweto Derby on Saturday 9 March. Here’s all you need to know ahead of arguably Africa’s greatest club rivalry.
Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs lock horns again
The Sea Robbers and the Glamour Boys square off at FNB Stadium on Saturday 9 March at 15:30.
Latest Soweto Derby team news
Olisa Ndah will hope to usurp Tapelo Xoki or Nkosinathi Sibisi in the heart of the Pirates defence. Evidence Makgopa is a major doubt so we could see returnee Tshegofatso Mabasa keep his place in the side. Zakhele Lepasa and Monnapule Saleng will likely have to settle for places on the bench as Karim Kimvuidi, Patrick Maswanganyi and Relebohile Mofokeng hope to supply chances for their frontman.
For Amakhosi, Edmilson Dove is suspended so we should see Spiwe Msimango and Njabulo Ngcobo continue their central defensive partnership. Coach Cavin Johnson must decide whether to deploy Nkosingiphile Ngcobo or Edson Castillo in the number 10 role, should he opt for Yusuf Maart and Sibongiseni Mthethwa at the base of midfield. Man of the moment Wandile Duba should continue to lead the line.
Snippets and match context
Itumeleng Khune is back for Amakhosi from suspension but is unlikely to start the derby against Orlando Pirates, but his presence in the dressing room is a big boost. He’s also looking fit as a fiddle. Pirates were underwhelmed after only managing a 1-1 midweek draw with Cape Town Spurs, while Chiefs finally got their first goal of 2024 through Wandile Duba’s wonder goal against Golden Arrows. The stage is set, with the sides separated by a single point on the PSL log.
