‘What’s going on Google?’ Android users yell as some phones are still waiting for free upgrade with new camera tools

SOME Google Pixel users have been left scratching their heads after a big update didn’t land on their phones as expected.

The June Pixel Feature Drop started rolling out on June 11 but a number of users claim they haven’t received it yet.

Among the free upgrades was a bunch of big AI tools.

Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a are set to gain access to Gemini Nano, which Google describes as its “most efficient AI model built for on-device tasks”.

The Summarise feature in Google’ s Recorder app is now powered by Gemini on Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a too, allowing it to serve up “more detailed and downloadable summaries.”

“It’s able to detect and include the names of speakers so conversational transcripts are improved,” Google explained.

“And with the ability to export transcripts into text files or Google Docs, keeping track of things like interviews and class lectures is made easy.”

You can also display content on bigger screens with Pixel 8a, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro using a monitor via USB-C.

Elsewhere, there’s a new Pixel camera feature that automatically identifies “the best moment from your photo” in HDR+ so it’s simpler to get a photo of you in focus and smiling.

Finally, Google has introduced a tool to quickly look up a mystery caller, allowing you to do a reverse phone number search directly from your call log.

Roll outs of new software do mean everyone isn’t able to get hold of updates immediately and at the same time.

Some users in the US, including Verizon and T-Mobile customers, have complained that they’re still waiting for the upgrade to land.

And manually attempting to download it doesn’t appear to work either.

“The system update in the settings doesn’t receive any updates when manually prompted,” one user wrote on Reddit.

“Also, when trying to update through the pixel update and repair tool, unsupported devices error message is stopping me from updating during the operator service selection step.

“Is it just me or does anyone else also not receive the June Features Update?”

Another frustrated Pixel owner responded: “WHAT’S GOING ON GOOGLE!”

A third added: “Here’s hoping sometime this week. Sigh.”

How to manually check for Android updates

Although other users have tried manually downloading the update with no success, you may get lucky – here’s what you need to do:

  1. Open your device’s Settings app
  2. Tap System
  3. Select Software update
  4. You’ll find your update status
  5. Follow the steps onscreen
