WHATSAPP users have discovered a handy hidden button that boosts their photos and videos to higher quality.
The popular messaging app currently compresses files so they’re slightly smaller.
This makes them faster to send and uses less data.
But those who literally want to be picture perfect can enhance their images to HD.
With an iPhone, standard quality reduces photos down to 960×1280 pixels, while HD keeps it at the original crisp resolution of 3024×4032 pixels.
Where videos are concerned, they are usually scaled down to 480p whereas HD puts them out at 720p.
The feature was added last year but you have to manually tap a button each time you send them.
However, eagle-eyed WhatsApp users have spotted a new button tucked away in the settings.
The bonus button lets you set HD quality as the default, so you don’t have to remember to set it manually every single time you send a photo or video.
“Finally,” one user wrote on X.

“Took them long enough…” another commented.
But think twice before switching the feature on straight away.
Firstly, as we explained previously, HD uses more data.
So consider whether you have enough data in your network plan to keep sending HD photos and videos as they can add up fast.
You don’t want to run out of data or be charged extra.
Secondly, because they are bigger files they will take slightly longer to send.
This is especially the case for videos which are particularly bulky.
How to make HD the default on WhatsApp
If you want to set HD as the default option on WhatsApp, start by opening the app and going to the Settings.
Tap the Storage and data option.
