And temperatures soared to 24C (75F) at Glasgow Airport.

But a full mixture of lightning, hail and torrential thunderstorms are forecast for the west of the country from 2pm tomorrow.

A yellow Met Office warning suggests a dramatic conclusion to the weekend and into Monday.

Intense downpours are possible in some areas, giving 20 to 30mm – over an inch – of rain in less than an hour.

In a few unlucky spots, the total could reach 30-50mm – two inches – in under three hours.

Lasting until 4am on Monday downpours could lead to flooding of homes and businesses as well as difficult driving conditions on the roads.

The Met Office believes that in some parts, communities could be cut off by floodwater and power cuts could occur.

The warning adds: “There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.”
