Wild queues seen as Aldi shoppers hunt for latest special

Bargain hunters across Australia began forming lines outside Aldi stores as the popular chain unveiled it’s latest wave of “special buys”.

The German discount supermarket, known for its cult following on social media, launched a range of kitchen essentials on Saturday, with cast aluminium pots ranging from $22.99 to $29.99, alongside new bowls, knives, air fryers and pressure cookers.

The new range will only be available until stocks run out and were advertised online and in catalogues a week in advance.

Social media showed customers queuing up outside of their respective Aldi before stores even opened on Saturday morning.

“Aldi really needs to put a limit on customers!! It was a frenzy!!,” one shopper posed from Sydney’s western suburbs.

“Lucky no one got hurt but some heated exchanges.”

In one image shared of Facebook, more than 50 people could be seen standing outside the closed supermarket leaning on empty shopping trolleys.

The discount supermarket’s middle aisle has delivered mega bargains on the most unexpected items.

Aldi has been present in Australia for more than two decades now, since opening it’s first two store in Sydney in January 2001.

The chain quickly expanded, overtaking IGA to become the third-biggest player in Australia’s supermarket sector by the end of 2013.

Aldi’s “special buys” – discounted items not normally sold in supermarkets – have remained a biweekly draw card for shoppers at its now more than 500 stores nationwide.
