Women’s World Cup: Sam Kerr stuns Australia and the soccer world with ridiculous goal in semifinal

This was simply spectacular from WA’s own Sam Kerr.

On the biggest stage of her accomplished career in a home World Cup semifinal, in her first start of the tournament after regaining full fitness, and with her team trailing early in the second half – none of the high stakes fazed the 29-year-old.

Running onto a neat ball from Katrina Gorry, Kerr showed she had no lingering effects of the calf injury that cruelled her start to the World Cup as she hit full pace.

With two defenders in her path, Kerr didn’t even make it into the box before launching with her right boot and hitting it as sweetly as she could have hoped for.

It was quickly cancelled out by England, however, who reclaimed the lead less than 10 minutes later and then added a third in the 86th minute to all but snuff out Australia’s hopes.

But on arguably the biggest night of soccer in this country, Kerr’s wonder strike will long live in the memory, regardless of the result.
