ZAP-happy police have used Tasers almost 10,000 times in just six years.
Officers have deployed them at 9,789 incidents in Scotland and fired them 317 times since 2018, data shows.
And use of the devices, which deliver a 50,000-volt electric shock, has rocketed from 395 incidents a year in 2018/2019 to 3,017 by 2023/24.
The increase comes amid a rise in the number of of assaults on front-line staff and spike in incidents involving weapons.
David Kennedy, general secretary of the Scottish Police Federation, wants their use expanded.
He said: “Violence against police officers is relentless. Officers face significant risks, including physical confrontations that can lead to serious injuries.
“Every front-line police officer should be equipped with a Taser as it enhances officer and public safety, reduces injury rates, and provides substantial cost savings.”
Tasers are usually used to incapacitate a person acting in a threatening or violent manner so they can be arrested.
About 2,000 officers at Police Scotland are trained to use them.
A spokesman said: “Tasers will only be used when it’s proportionate, necessary and justified.”
