3,271 BMS, BBA, BCA institutions get AICTE approval so far; 694 in Karnataka and 467 in Maharashtra

Mumbai: As many as 3,271 institutions running BMS, BBA and BCA courses across the country were issued the letter of approvals by the All-India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) so far. These courses have been brought under the council’s regulations for the first time this year. With 467 of the 3,271 institutions, Maharashtra has the highest numbers to get approval so far, after Karnataka, which has 694.Kerala with 309 institutions, Madhya Pradesh (183) and Punjab (159) come next.
Speaking about the grant of approvals, AICTE chairman TG Sitharam said that they are expediting the approval process. “The uniform curriculum framework will also be out in a week’s time for feedback from all stakeholders and we intend to start the teacher training exercise too,” said Sitharam. To allow a smooth application process, the council has once again extended the deadline to apply for approvals till April 16. After the five states to have received the highest numbers of approvals so far, Telangana (158), Gujarat (153), Bihar (153), Uttar Pradesh (152), Haryana (153), Tamil Nadu (114), come next with over 100 institutions.
Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, a recent state govt letter responding to a query from one of the state universities, has sent colleges in a tizzy. The letter clarifies that permissions to start not just new colleges, but also additional divisions, batches, subjects under BMS, BBA, BCA or courses in design and fashion design must be sought from the AICTE for the academic year 2024-25. The clarification has been issued after the state received many proposals for the grant of letters of intent for new colleges under these courses too.
The letter addressed to the registrar of all state universities, mentioned that the govt had informed them in an e-mail dated February 3, 2024, to ask institutions to register with the council for all AICTE-recognised courses within the prescribed period. The universities were asked to check whether the institutions fulfil all criteria enlisted by the AICTE and issue a no-objection certificate. The letter reiterates that proposals for all these courses now regulated by the AICTE should not be sent to the govt.
Principal Sudhakar Jadhawar, president of the unaided educational institutions in Maharashtra, said that the state govt has been rushing into the implementation without any dialogue with the stakeholders. “There is still confusion among colleges on whether they should go with the AICTE or go for a change in nomenclature. The matter is also pending in the court. The state has also rushed into announcing the entrance test. The admission process for these popular courses could be chaotic this year as not many students are aware,” said Jadhawar.
TA Shiware, chairman, Association of Non-Government Colleges (ANGC), said that the govt letter is a clear indication that slowly all the regulation matters in these courses, including enrollment and fees, will be controlled by the AICTE norms. “It is all the more important for Mumbai University to expedite the process of the change in nomenclature of the BMS course to B Com (Management Studies), so that colleges who are not keen to go with the AICTE have an option. Other universities, such as in Kolhapur, Nagpur and Solapur, have already started the process,” said Shiware.
