5 students killed after car falls into gorge in India

INDIA, May 5: Tragedy struck in the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand on Saturday as a car carrying seven occupants veered off the road and plunged into a deep ditch, resulting in the loss of five lives and leaving one individual critically injured.

According to an official statement, the harrowing incident occurred near Pani Wala Band on Mussoorie Dehradun Marg, Jhadipani Road, Uttarakhand. Superintendent of Police for the City, Pramod Kumar, revealed that the car lost control, leading to the fatal accident.

Among the occupants were four boys and two girls, all students of Dehradun IMS College who were on a trip to Mussoorie. Tragically, as they were returning to Dehradun in the morning, their vehicle veered off the road, plunging into the deep ditch.

Emergency response teams, including Mussoorie Police, Fire Service, and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), swiftly responded to the scene. They managed to rescue the two girls from the wreckage and transported them to a hospital in Dehradun. However, despite medical efforts, one of the girls succumbed to her injuries, bringing the death toll to five. The injured individual, identified as Nancy, is currently undergoing treatment, with reports indicating her condition to be critical.

In a separate incident on April 22, tragedy struck again as one person died and another was injured after a vehicle fell into a gorge in the Rudraprayag district of Uttar Pradesh. The deceased, identified as Preetam Singh (24), hailed from Bhunka village, Rudraprayag. The injured individual, Suraj Singh (35), was also a resident of the same village.

Upon receiving information, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team, led by Sub-Inspector Bhagat Singh, promptly rushed to the accident site. While one person was tragically pronounced dead at the scene, the injured individual had already been rescued and taken to the hospital by locals. The SDRF team retrieved the body of the deceased from the wrecked vehicle and handed it over to the district police.
