  • A Chevrolet Corvette driving near Los Angeles became pinned under an 18-wheeler’s trailer after crashing into the back of it.
  • The driver had to be removed from the crushed vehicle by first responders.
  • The 77-year-old man at the wheel of the Corvette survived the initial collision, but his current condition is not known.

One of the more nerve-racking aspects of regular highway driving is encountering an 18-wheeler transport truck and realizing just how large and potentially hazardous it can be. Recently, a Chevrolet Corvette C8 driver near Los Angeles, California, had a firsthand experience of what many of us would hope to only have nightmares about.

The driver, reportedly a 77-year-old man, was traveling on a highway in Castaic, just north of LA, when his Corvette collided with the back of a big rig. The circumstances leading up to the accident remain unknown. However, based on video footage of the aftermath, it appears that the truck might have been stationary on the highway shoulder when the Chevrolet slammed into it.

Following the collision, the sports model, an eighth-generation Corvette painted Amplify Orange, became trapped under the trailer of the 18-wheeler, prompting several people to call 911, as reported by KCAL. Unfortunately, the vehicle’s position meant that the Chevy driver could not escape from the vehicle under his own power.

First responders worked for over half an hour at the scene, removing parts from the vehicle and tossing them to the side as they attempted to create a path to free the man from the damaged car.

Luckily, the C8 driver survived the initial impact and, in videos of the rescue attempt, his arm can be seen moving within the vehicle. After being removed from the sports car, a police officer is seen leaning down over the man, in an apparent attempt to hear what the injured driver was saying.

Unfortunately, the 77-year-old’s condition is not currently known, and authorities only said that he had suffered crush injuries. Reports suggest that the 18-wheeler’s driver was not hurt in the incident.

While it remains unclear what caused the accident, this is a good opportunity to remind drivers not to focus too intently on obstacles they want to avoid. We tend to steer into whatever we’re looking at, so it’s best to keep an eye on the road ahead, not on vehicles stopped on the side of the road.
