The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has announced the Margdarshan Scheme for all the AICTE approved and centrally funded institutions located across the country. The scheme, funded by AICTE, has been launched for 33 Margdarshan Institutes and 330 Mentee Beneficiary Institutions (MBI).
Centrally funded institutes including IITs, NITs, IIITs, IISc and IISERs would be the Margdarshan institutes or mentor institutes. Apart from this, several other Margdarshan institutes will be selected across the country based on their years of existence, National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings, accreditation status, availability of sponsored research projects, number of national and international conferences they have organised, availability of industry-sponsored labs amongst them and availability of IPR cell.
Only AICTE-approved Mentee Beneficiary Institutes (MBI) will be provided mentorship. Mentor Institutes will provide access to its facilities such as laboratories, libraries, innovation and incubation cells, and the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cells to Mentee Beneficiary Institutes. Margdarshan institutions will also provide guidance and support to the beneficiary institutes for achieving NIRF rankings, NBA/NAAC accreditation..
Speaking to Education Times, TG Sitharam, chairman, AICTE, says, “Margdarshan initiative has been introduced by AICTE for enabling unaccredited technical institutions to get recognition. These institutes will get to learn about the AICTE initiatives and will receive guidance and support for achieving good NIRF ranking, NBA/NAAC accreditation.”
This will be done through a variety of activities such as training workshops, mentoring, research and innovation activities. “The chief coordinator of the Margdarshan institution will identify appropriate resource persons for mentoring MBIs. Mentoring will focus on providing MBIs with awareness of outcome-based education, promotion of innovation and research culture, continuous feedback mechanisms for improvement and documentation of all academic processes,” added Sitharam.
“Margdarshan institutes will also involve MBIs in conducting Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs), expert lectures, universal human value programmes, career counselling programmes and induction programmes. “This will qualitatively enhance the quality of technical education as a whole in the country. Apart from this, the rural institutions which are not accredited may avail the mentorship from a nearby Margdarshan Institute located within 200 km,” adds Sitharam.
Abhay Jere, vice-chairman, AICTE, says, “Each Margdarshan institute can mentor 10 Margdarshan Beneficiary Institutes (MBIs), who will eventually get better NIRF ranking, NBA/NAAC accreditation. This scheme would bring in a culture of mentorship in engineering colleges and will create a quality educational ecosystem.”
