Better Homes and Gardens’ Joh Griggs shares update after husband’s health ordeal

Better Homes and Gardens host Johanna Griggs has given an update after her husband suffered a health scare.

Late last year the popular TV personality’s husband, Todd Huggins, was diagnosed with a basal cell carcinoma, but “simple surgery” led to complications, including a nasty infection.

Speaking to 7Life in February, Joh said it was “quite a serious situation” that had taken Todd some time to recover from.

Now, Joh has given an update on his progress.

“He had a skin cancer removed and they didn’t get enough of the margins around it, so when he went back in, he managed to pick up a random infection, which is not uncommon in hospitals,” Joh said.

“He absolutely lucked out; it was very hairy stuff for a couple of weeks.

“But he’s back, fighting fit, 100 per cent again.”

Joh says there was one good thing to come out of the worrying time.

“If anything, I think it was an apt time to remind people to go and get their skin checked,” she said.

“I think that was one of the things during COVID that fell off the radar – people getting breast checks and skin checks, going to the dentist, all the health things that we are usually in the habit of doing regularly.

“But during COVID, those health services weren’t as easily available, or people were concerned about going out.

“We used to be so vigilant with skin checks because of my background in sport and with health – you didn’t want to miss anything.

“But we realised he hadn’t actually gone and had a skin check throughout the duration of COVID.

“So it was a chance to say to people, ‘hey listen, put it back on your agenda and make it a priority’.”

Joh spends a lot of time outdoors, both in her role as a host of Better Homes and Gardens and in her everyday life, so sun protection is high on her agenda – especially after her husband’s recent ordeal.

“Having watched Todd have the basal cell carcinoma taken out of his face and … older family members go through all sorts of experiences and ex-swimmers having melanomas … it’s a really important thing,” she said back in February.

With that health scare over, Joh is now looking forward to the upcoming Logies, with Better Homes and Gardens nominated for a Logie for Most Popular Lifestyle Program.

“We have such a passionate fan base and we can’t go anywhere without people stopping us to say how much they love the show,” she said.

“I still think that’s amazing, in this day and age, that people will stop you to talk about something they’ve seen on the show.

“It’s a beautiful thing being involved in Better Homes, in the sense that it’s been around so long now that people feel they know us really well, that the show is part of their routine.

“There’s a lot of sentimentality attached to it too, because we often hear things like, ‘Oh, I used to watch this show with my Nanna,’ or that they had watched it at different important times in their life, like moving into their first apartment or buying their first home.

“So, for us, we are over the moon that we’ve been nominated.

“It’s such a positive show; in an era when confrontational, sometimes nasty reality TV can be all the rage, it’s nice to have that antidote, something that is comforting and that celebrates positive stories and amazing people.”
