A WA road has ranked third on a national report’s list of Australia’s “scariest” roads.
Continental Tyres’ research found that WA’s Kwinana Freeway comes only under Queensland’s Bruce Highway and NSW’s Parramatta Road.
The report showed WA’s top three scariest roads included:
- Kwinana Freeway (47% of respondents)
- Mitchell Freeway (45%), and
- Thomas Road (11%).
WA drivers were found to be most scared by dangerous drivers (79%) on the road alongside merging (40%), wet roads (31%), congested roads (27%), and confusing signage (23%) to follow.
Seatbelts topped the features that instil West Australians’ confidence on the road, followed by brakes (23%), safety technology (19%), tyres (14%), handling (11%), airbags (3%), mirrors (2%), and headlights (2%).
The report comes ahead of the Easter long weekend when many West Australians will be road-tripping far and wide for a brief holiday.
The study found 36% of respondents had not personally checked their tyre pressures in the past month.
Continental Tyres Australia managing director Mitchell Golledge said the results show people need to have an increased awareness of the importance of tyre maintenance.
“As a tyre company we want to ensure that Aussies feel safe and confident on the road, especially ahead of long weekend road trips. It’s saddening to see in the research that people are avoiding particular routes, and enough emphasis isn’t being placed on vital tyre maintenance,” he said.
