‘Cultural pollution’: couple in T-shirts with swear words on Shanghai subway outrage public who demand action and penalties

A young couple in China have irked mainland public opinion after they were filmed wearing T-shirts featuring swear words and causing a scene in a Shanghai subway carriage with the video going viral on social media.

The short video from July 17 showed a woman in a baggy green T-shirt with swear words in Chinese characters and a man in a white T-shirt with English curse words standing in the carriage while singing and dancing about and at one point the man is seen hanging upside down from an overhead handrail, reported The Paper.

An employee of the company operating the subway said some passengers had complained about the couple’s clothing but said the operator cannot do anything about the pair.

“The current rules stipulate that passengers are allowed to enter the subway station as long as they are neatly dressed, not barefoot or bare-chested. There is no rule that people with profanity on their clothes cannot enter the station,” the employee told The Paper.

She added that if passengers spot any indecent or inappropriate behaviour, such as hanging upside down from the handrail, they should report it to the subway staff in a timely manner, and staff will act on the information and stop the behaviour immediately.
