What do Dakota Johnson, Kim Kardashian, Sydney Sweeney, and little old me all have in common? Well, besides the fact that we’re all really, really hot, we’ve all used the CurrentBody Skin LED Face Mask ($380). I’ve been on the LED mask train since 2019, and I’ve tested my fair share of products since my first-ever purchase. It seems like the tools are only getting better.

For the unfamiliar, light emitting diode therapy, aka LED therapy, has amazing benefits for skin. It was originally developed for NASA, then later for doctors and in-office use. Now, it’s available in the comfort of our own homes. Blue light helps with acne; red light helps with antiaging, wound healing, and much more. I’ve been using the Kardashian-loved face mask for a little over a month now, and to say I’m obsessed is an understatement.

  • It has 132 LED bulbs — 66 red and 66 near-infrared.
  • The wavelengths are clinically proven to reach up to 4mm of skin tissue.
  • Red light helps to boost collagen, while near-infrared reduces inflammation and boosts cellular oxygenation.
  • The mask comes with a user manual, a USB-C charging cable, a controller, a strap, and comfort goggles.

What I Like About the CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Face Mask

One of the most annoying things about LED face masks is that they’re hard to travel with — or, they were until I found this one. I’m typically used to hard masks that are rigid in shape and structure, which makes them difficult to pack in a bag when heading on vacation or even a short weekend trip. This mask is flexible, which makes it so easy to pack. I can lay it flat or roll it up, and it even comes with a storage bag so I don’t have to worry about it getting dirty. Because it’s bendable, it also molds comfortably to my face. However, I will say that it can be a bit tricky to get situated at first.

I’ve also used it on my chest, my neck, and my head (since I’ve heard red light helps stimulate hair growth). The brand does have a separate neck device you can purchase separately, but if you don’t mind laying down while the mask sits on your neck, I don’t see a reason to purchase a second piece.

While most of the LED masks I’ve tested have both red and blue light options, it’s important to note that this one is just red light and near-infrared light. However, the brand uses clinically-proven wavelengths that are the same as the ones used for in-office treatments, and can reach up to 4mm of skin tissue.

Since I started using it, I’ve noticed that it’s helped diminish dark spots from acne and brighten my complexion. Is it reducing my wrinkles? The brand says yes, but since I’m an avid user of Botox, I’m not totally sure. Will I keep using it religiously? Absolutely.

How to Use the CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Face Mask

First and foremost, the brand recommends doing a patch test using the mask on your arm prior to using it on your face. I felt this was important to note because it’s not an instruction I’ve encountered before with LED masks. The brand says to do a full ten-minute session and if your skin turns red, you should discontinue use.

If your skin reacts fine, you’re cleared to use it on your face — as long as it’s clean and dry. You can use a small amount of serum or eye cream around your eyes, but the brand says not to use any products with SPF in them prior to wearing the mask. The device requires 4.5 hours of charging before it’s ready to go, and when the battery is ready, a green light will appear on the power button. The brand offers “comfort goggles” if you find the LED lights to be too bright, but I personally found the goggles to be uncomfortable (ironic, I know), so I opted to use the mask without them. The brand notes that the device is safe to use without the goggles and has been tested for eye safety standards.

The mask will run a ten minute session once you power it on and then turn off automatically. When you’re finished, wipe the mask clean with alcohol wipes or a damp cloth and store it in the included bag.

What to Consider Before Trying the CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Face Mask

Although it doesn’t need to be plugged in to use, it does have a cord hanging from the right side at all times. The mask is essentially hands-free, but I do find it a bit annoying to walk around with a cord hanging in front of my face. Typically, I toss it behind my shoulder if I’m moving while using it; otherwise, it doesn’t really bother me when I’m sitting stationary on the couch. This is something to keep in mind when you’re shopping for your perfect LED mask.
