Danelo Cavalcante escapes Chester County Prison where he was imprisoned for murder of Deborah Brandao

Philadelphia CNN  —  According to local officials, Danelo Cavalcante, a convicted murderer who escaped from a Pennsylvania prison on Thursday, was seen on a surveillance camera in the area. Cavalcante, 34, broke out of Chester County Prison, located about 30 miles west of Philadelphia, at approximately 8:50 a.m. on Thursday, as confirmed by the Chester County District Attorney’s Office. District Attorney Deb Ryan considered Cavalcante to be an “extremely dangerous man.” He was convicted of first-degree murder in August 2021 for killing his former girlfriend, Deborah Brandão, aged 33. Cavalcante was sentenced to life without parole the previous week. On Saturday morning, the DA’s Facebook post stated that the camera had recorded Cavalcante at around 12:30 a.m., approximately 1.5 miles away from Chester County Prison. He was seen wearing a light-colored T-shirt, pants, and white sneakers, and carrying a backpack. The DA described him as 5 feet tall, with “shaggy black hair” and brown eyes. In addition, the DA’s Facebook post mentioned that there was also a report of an attempted burglary in nearby Pocopson Township at 11:30 p.m. Residents were advised by law enforcement to remain indoors and lock their vehicles, reviewing surveillance cameras for any suspicious activity and contacting the police if necessary. The district attorney provided an update in the afternoon, stating that authorities believe Cavalcante is still within one to two miles of the prison. Over 100 tips relating to the search have been received. Residents in the area are advised to stay inside, lock their doors and cars. Residents with surveillance cameras are urged to review the footage for anything suspicious. There is a possibility that Cavalcante may attempt to break into vacant homes during the Labor Day weekend. People are encouraged to keep an eye on their neighbors’ empty homes. The Longwood Gardens, a popular tourist destination, closed temporarily following advice from law enforcement. A large-scale search involving hundreds of law enforcement officers, including the US Marshals, SWAT teams, and local and state agencies, is being conducted in the surrounding area. Authorities have stated that Cavalcante is considered extremely dangerous, and if seen, the public is advised not to approach him and to immediately notify 911. Authorities have no information to suggest that Cavalcante received assistance from family members or others in his escape. Efforts are focused on locating Cavalcante. Previously, it was believed that he might be heading south towards Mexico and Brazil, his home country. Cavalcante is also wanted in connection with a 2017 homicide case in Brazil. The US Marshals Service has informed Brazilian authorities about his escape. The reward for information leading to Cavalcante’s capture has been increased to $10,000. Authorities have emphasized that Cavalcante is skilled at evading law enforcement and will do anything to avoid capture. The public is urged to call 911 with any information regarding Cavalcante’s whereabouts. Authorities are also investigating whether Cavalcante had help from inside the prison to escape.
