Dolphins’ Mike McDaniel called one-play touchdown against Jets

Mike McDaniel called his shot.

Miami’s head coach accurately predicted the Dolphins would need just one play to get into the end zone against the Jets during their 30-0 rout Sunday, calling for Jaylen Waddle to take it to the house moments before the wide receiver tallied a 60-yard touchdown grab.

“I’m really visualizing the one-play drive here,” McDaniel said, as shown on “Hard Knocks.”

The Dolphins led the Jets, 10-0, roughly halfway through the second quarter when they opened a drive at their own 40-yard line.

McDaniel approached superstar receiver Tyreek Hill, who did not play Sunday, and said: “I’m having a tough time not visualizing a one-play drive here.”

While it’s hard to tell where exactly in the sequence things were said, McDaniel is then captured saying: “If we get kick coverage, Waddle’s going to have a one-play drive here. … Yeah, hahaha. Here it comes.”

Waddle lined up on the left side for the play and raced by D.J. Reed, beating the Jets cornerback for a perfectly placed ball from Tua Tagovailoa.

Once Reed whiffed on a deflection, the former first-round pick coasted into the end zone to give the Dolphins a 17-0 lead.

“What a perfect pass, play and the touchdown to Jaylen Waddle,” CBS’ Jim Nantz said.

That touchdown all but ended any thought of a Jets comeback, and the Dolphins completed the series sweep.

“Just one-on-one. It’s my fault,” Reed said. “I got to stay on top, he ran a drift-and-go, so they gave me two drifts early on, and I played aggressive on the drift, and he gave me a drift-and-go, Tua threw a good ball, no help, I got to get him down, make the play.

“That’s on me, got to be better.”

McDaniel and the Dolphins will have to hit some big plays again this Sunday when they host the Cowboys in a game with playoff implications.

The Dolphins are 1.5-point favorites at FanDuel.
