Woman’s Day has reported “an engagement announcement is on the horizon” for the 17-year-old heir and his rumoured Italian girlfriend Princess Maria Chiara di Borbone, 18.

A source claimed that the young prince recently introduced Maria Chiara to his grandmother, Queen Margrethe and she made “a good impression”.

“Christian knew they’d hit it off and was thrilled that she invited them to tea,” the source told the publication.

“It’s an informal stamp of approval for Chiara because Margrethe doesn’t take tea with just anyone.”

The Danish royal family has yet to address the rumoured relationship.

The two royals have known each other since they were children, with their families being close.

Maria Chiara is the daughter of Princess Camilla and Prince Carlo, the claimant to the headship of the former House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies.

Carlo is the godfather of Christian’s younger sister Princess Josephine, 11.

Maria Chiara is reportedly “in awe” of Queen Margrethe, with the source claiming she has been “practising her curtsies for months”.

“There’s no doubt an engagement announcement is on the horizon and the palace is preparing accordingly,” the source continued.

Queen Margrethe allegedly places a focus on her lineage and believes it is her “duty to invest time in Christian’s happiness and his choice of partner”.

“Christian’s relieved – and so is his mum, Princess Mary, who has relied on her mother-in-law’s advice on what it takes to be a Queen from day one,” the source continued.

Christian was first spotted with the stunning Italian princess on a day out with friends at the Monaco Grand Prix in May.

Pictures emerged on social media of the couple looking close, besides Maria Chiara’s older sister, Princess Carolina, 19, who was seen in the picture wearing a silver tailored suit.

Maria Chiara was pictured at the far right, wearing blue and standing close to Christian, who was in a beige suit.

“Christian is… interested in having a proper girlfriend, mostly to fend off wannabe fans, but he also likes the idea of having a real companion,” a Danish source told Woman’s Day at the time.

“Chiara ticks all the right boxes – she’s funny, intelligent, and very well-connected via her social media.

“Of course, Mary would love to see him date someone like Chiara, who, despite seeming to have a jet-set lifestyle, has never had a whiff of scandal, nor has her older sister Carolina.”

The source said Christian was very “taken” with the blonde beauty.
