Middletown, New York CNN — Students and first responders are deeply affected by a tragic bus crash that led to the death of two beloved teachers. The bus, which was carrying members of Farmingdale High School’s marching band, went off an interstate and rolled down a ravine. Trooper Jason Lewis, who was one of the first to arrive at the scene in Wawayanda, described it as horrendous. Students on the bus were crying and asking for their parents. The crash occurred while the band was heading to a camp in Pennsylvania. The bus crashed through a guardrail and flipped over multiple times. Emergency crews had difficulty accessing and rescuing the injured passengers. Two people, including the band director and a long-time chaperone, lost their lives. Five students are still in critical condition in the hospital, while twenty-two others have been released. The cause of the crash is still unknown, but a faulty front tire is suspected. The National Transportation Safety Board has arrived to investigate the accident. The band chaperone, Beatrice Ferrari, had been teaching at Farmingdale High School for 32 years and was close friends with the band director, Gina Pellettiere. Both were highly regarded and loved by the school community. The band director was described as warm and passionate about her craft.
