Gauteng’s ongoing efforts to enhance its transportation infrastructure reached a significant milestone as Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, the MEC for Transport and Logistics, officially reopened the Winnie Mandela Drive southbound section of the road linking the N1 and N14 highways.
Additionally, the reopening marks a crucial step towards the completion of the comprehensive upgrade of Winnie Mandela Drive, a vital artery in Diepsloot spanning seven kilometres.
Winnie Mandela Drive reconstruction completes: Relief anticipated for Fourways traffic woes
Situated in the bustling Fourways area, north of Johannesburg, the reconstruction project of Winnie Mandela Drive has been underway to address congestion issues plaguing the region. In addition, with the road’s reopening, authorities anticipate a considerable relief in traffic congestion, offering smoother commutes for residents and businesses alike.
During the reopening ceremony held on Thursday, MEC Diale-Tlabela emphasised the road’s pivotal role in connecting Gauteng, stressing its social significance, economic impact, and facilitation of traffic flow from Pretoria to Sandton through Diepsloot. Furthermore, she highlighted the forthcoming benefits, noting that upon completion, the upgraded artery would provide a direct route from Fourways to Pretoria via Winnie Mandela Drive.
Moreover, the nearing completion of the road project has already spurred various planned developments, including mixed-use activities within Steyn City. This infusion of infrastructure investment is expected to stimulate job creation and bolster Gauteng’s economy.
Steyn City Properties’ 30% investment spurs local empowerment and job creation
Notably, Steyn City Properties (Pty) Ltd, a key contributor to the project, is investing 30% in accordance with the Implementing Agency Agreement. This commitment ensures active participation from Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) contractors, empowerment of emerging contractors, and promotion of job creation within the region.
“This initiative aligns with our vision of bringing essential services closer to residents and demonstrating improved service delivery. The K46 Phase 2 project stands as a testament to our commitment to enhancing the quality of life of the people of Gauteng,” remarked MEC Diale-Tlabela, underscoring the government’s dedication to improving infrastructure and fostering socio-economic development across the province.
As the comprehensive upgrade of Winnie Mandela Drive nears completion, stakeholders anticipate a transformative impact on transportation efficiency, economic growth, and community well-being in Gauteng.
The South African reported that the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture officially gazetted the latest round of name changes for South Africa. Among them is William Nicol Drive in Johannesburg, now officially named Winnie Mandela Drive, a change that had new signage in place since September 2023, reportedly costing taxpayers R250 000.
