Golden Globes 2024 Red Carpet Trend: Metallics Gowns – WWD

From the runway to the red carpet, the fall 2023 couture trend of metallic fashions seen at Balenciaga, Chanel, Paco Rabanne and more influenced one of the biggest trends of the night at the Golden Globes, with myriad metallic hues proving to be a major color story.

Margot Robbie was an outlier shimmering in full Barbie pink in a sequined Armani Privé gown that referenced 1977’s Superstar Barbie, but others dazzled in head-turning silver, gold and bronze recalling Olympic medals, awards statuettes (and perhaps, a bit of Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” wardrobe).

Taking home the award for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role on Television for her role of Princess Diana in “The Crown,” Elizabeth Debicki emulated a modern princess in an “antique silver-hued” Dior couture fall 2023 gown, which she told WWD felt like metal mesh. “It’s actually a little heavy,” she said.

Shimmering in silver and styled by Jeanann Williams, Naomi Watts donned an eye-catching fall 2023 Fendi couture one-shoulder dress made of satin lamé and embellished with allover embroidery, paired with a Tyler Ellis clutch and Jimmy Choo heels. Meanwhile Quinta Brunson, styled by Jessica Paster, wore a custom Balmain silver halter-neck column gown with transparent tulle cutouts and made up of 130,000 Swarovski upcycled crystals. “I’m so excited about this dress, I wanted to go simple but fun for the Globes,” she said, adding of designer of Olivier Rousteing, “I’ve heard wonderful things, and he was instrumental in the creation of this.”

The metallic trend continued in the spring 2024 ready-to-wear collections and two of Pamella Roland’s spring 2024 metallic numbers also hit the red carpet, seen on “Barbie” actress Issa Rae and Karen Fukuhara of “The Boy and the Heron.”

“The inspiration for our spring 2024 collection came from a trip to Morocco I took last year. After visiting this beautiful country, I knew we had to create a collection that infused all of this culture of rich colors, natural fixtures and intricate patterns. The geometric manner found in the Moorish architecture, the vibrant colors of the souks, and the rich textiles of the region all come together to make an elegant but powerful visual,” Roland told WWD of the looks.

Rae, styled by Wouri Vice, donned a Moroccan-inspired metallic orange geometric tile sequin embroidered gown while Fukuhara, styled by Paster, chose a strapless tulle gown with gold and sapphire 3D paillette grid embroidery.

Also sparkling in sequins was “Killers of the Flower Moon” actress Cara Jade Myers, who wore a custom Rodarte long-sleeve gown with eye-catching, allover iridescent sequins and shoulder-adorning 3D flower details.
