MLB analyst Greg Amsinger pulled off one of the most egregious announcer jinxes in history ahead of Tuesday’s Los Angeles Dodgers game.
As MLB Network was finishing its roundup of the day’s games, Amsinger boldly claimed Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto was on “no-hitter alert” before throwing the first pitcher. The Japanese pitcher — who signed a 12-year, $325 million contract in the off-season — has been dominant so far in his first year in the MLB.
“Don’t take this the wrong way, but we are already [on] no-hitter alert,” Amsinger said. “Yoshinobu Yamamoto — before he throws a single pitch tonight against the Marlins — we have a no-hitter alert.
“Enjoy what could be a no-hitter from Yamamoto right here on MLB Network.”
That prediction couldn’t have gone any worse.
On Yamamoto’s very first pitch of the game, Marlins outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. took him deep for a leadoff home run.
After the game, MLB Network host Abby Labar showed viewers that Amsinger couldn’t control his laughter when it happened.
“You could literally see it on his face,” Labar said. “The smirk — you knew it was gonna happen. Greg, how many times do we have to tell you, ‘No! No!.’ On behalf of my league, I apologize to Yamamoto. This has nothing to do with you and everything to do with Greg Amsinger.”
