Hibs add another VAR blunder to the list and say SFA have apologised for failing to give handball penalty vs Aberdeen

HIBS claim the SFA have admitted they made another VAR blunder in their weekend draw with Aberdeen.

Easter Road chiefs met with Hampden chiefs on Monday after they were denied a penalty when the ball hit Nicky Devlin’s arm in Saturday’s clash.

Ref David Munro snubbed appeals for a spot-kick, a decision which was then backed up by VAR David Dickinson.

Nick Montgomery’s side weren’t involved in any of the video mistakes announced last week.

But the club last night issued a statement insisting it had been confirmed to them they were on the wrong end of a decision at Pittodrie.

The statement said: “Hibernian FC met with Scottish FA representatives following the club’s cinch Premiership match away at Aberdeen (17 February, 2024).

“Upon review of the game, the club believes VAR made a serious error in the first half when Jordan Obita’s cross hit the arm of Aberdeen defender Nicky Devlin.

“The incident was reviewed by VAR, and the referee was advised that the on-field decision was correct, meaning no penalty was awarded.

“The club held meetings with the Scottish FA at Hampden earlier today (19 February) to challenge the decision. The governing body outlined that the Referee Department agreed that the incident should have been referred by VAR for On-Field Review, and therefore an error was made.

“This is not the first occasion where the club has received an apology for VAR errors, and the club will continue to work with the Scottish FA regarding officiating in the Scottish game.”

Last week ref chief Crawford Allan opened up on VAR decisions this season.

A review of the system revealed 16 errors had been made – or reached an incorrect outcome.

The list included the first penalty awarded in the league against Rangers for almost TWO years.

FIVE other errors involving Rangers matches were also highlighted with it being deemed that two penalties given to the Light Blues should NOT have been awarded.

In total, the SFA say 785 VAR reviews have been conducted in the Premiership this campaign, with 51 of those resulting in on-field reviews.

They say 89.3 per-cent of decisions given on-field by the referee have been considered correct.

And despite the 16 mistakes noted, they add that with VAR interventions accounted for, decision accuracy increases to 97.6 per-cent.

Three decisions were deemed to be incorrect by the independent panel during the first round of fixtures.

Those were a penalty-kick from Bojan Miovski that the Aberdeen striker managed to ‘double-hit’ not being spotted.

That was as well as two decisions against Dundee, one not to downgrade a Josh Mulligan red card to a yellow and a disallowed goal against Livingston.
