Hong Kong police arrested at least five men over what appeared to be a failed robbery at a watch and jewellery store in the city’s bustling Tsim Sha Tsui shopping district on Tuesday, the Post learned.
According to a source familiar with the case, officers were called to the VIP Station store along Haiphong Road shortly before midday, just as four of the suspects entered the shop. A fifth man was arrested outside the store, he added.
“An initial investigation revealed the gang was carrying a knife and what appeared to be a handgun at the time,” the insider said.
The insider said officers apprehended at least four men at the scene, adding no shots were fired during the incident.
Another source said the arrests were made after officers laid an ambush for the group.
Officers have cordoned off the area as detectives gather information.
Last September, three robbers stormed VIP Station’s branch on Canton Road, smashing the glass display counters and making off with watches worth HK$3.7 million (US$473,370). They escaped in a getaway car driven by a fourth suspect.
Police later arrested several suspects including a 10-year-old boy in connection with the hold-up.
Official figures show the number of robbery rose by 26 per cent to 97 last year, up from 77 in 2022.
