MUMBAI: Even as Professor Subhasis Chaudhari’s term as the IIT-Bombay director officially ends on Wednesday, he will continue to hold the post till a fresh appointment is made.
In a letter from the IIT Council, received last week by the institute, the council has asked Prof Chaudhari ‘to continue to discharge his responsibilities as the director till the joining of the new incumbent’, said an institute official. It mentioned that the process of recruitment of a new director is underway and in the meantime the council’s chairman has approved the current director’s continuation in the post. Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan is the current chairperson of the council. The official said that a formal announcement will be made once an appointment is done.
Prof Chaudhuri, an electrical engineer, was appointed as the director in 2019 and he took charge on April 18 the same year. His official term was to end on April 17. The union ministry had released an advertisement in October, about six months ago, inviting applicants with administrative and teaching experience preferably aged under 60. The advertisement had stated that an interested candidate is expected to have a minimum of five years of administrative experience and leadership qualities to head such an institute of national importance. A source claimed that the selection process should have been over by now as it had started early.
