Incredible transformation as man, 51, has giant head tumour removed in intricate 10-hour operation

A MAN underwent a life-changing transformation after surgeons removed a massive tumour 15lb growing out of his scalp in an intricate 10-hour operation.

Rabindra Bisui, 51, from West Bengal, lived with the tumour for 25 year before surgeons managed to rid him of it.

The small growth rapidly surged in size in the seven months prior to Rabindra’s operation, reaching a whopping 15.43lbs and severely impacting his move, work and carry out day-to-day activities.

The 51-year-old’s tumour was a synovial sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that tends to grow around the joints of the arms and legs, such as on the knees and elbows.

It’s thought to be caused by certain chromosomes – the parts within cells that contain DNA – being broken apart and put back together in the wrong way, according to Sarcoma UK.

Removing the tumour presented a significant challenge to surgeons at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhubaneswar, due to its rarity and aggressive nature.

A number of blood vessels also surrounded Rabindra’s tumour, making the operation especially tricky.

Dr Sanjay Giri, head of the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery, AIIMS-Bhubaneswar noted that “the tumour was unusually swollen and removing it from the scalp was risky”.

Due to the case’s complex nature, it took a multidisciplinary team of specialists from a number of departments at AIIMS Bhubaneswar to remove it.

Experts in neurosurgery, anaesthesiology, interventional radiology, and surgical oncology all got involved.

During the challenging 10-hour procedure, surgeons were at pains to ensure that Rabindra’s skull bone remained intact.

The operation was a success and surgeons were able to completely remove the tumour.

Rabindra expressed his gratitude to the medical team, likening them to guardian angels for saving his life.

Dr Ashutosh Biswas, executive director of AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, commended the team’s success, noting how Rabindra was left with no post-operative complications.

“The tumour had been afflicting him for over two decades

“This achievement highlights the dedication and collaborative efforts of a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals,” the hospital said in a statement.

Only about 79 cases of synovial sarcoma diagnosed every year in England.

Symptoms can vary depending on the size and location of the tumour.
