James McFadden vanishes in horror crash at Salina Highbanks sprintcar race

Two-time Australian sprintcar champion James McFadden has had a lucky escape after spearing off the track in a crash at Salina Highbanks in the US.

McFadden started the 30-lap feature race on pole and maintained the advantage until disaster struck during a back-and-forth battle with Brad Sweet on laps nine and 10.

McFadden was in the lead on the back straight when Sweet dived down for a pass on the inside.

But two into one didn’t go and the pair bumped at the rear, sending McFadden spinning and flying off the banked turn towards the car park.

His car appeared to land first on its side before rolling multiple times and thankfully coming to rest on its four wheels.

McFadden exited the car and walked away under his own power.

“McFadden just trying to run the middle and maybe Brad kind of just missed the bottom a little bit,” the commentator said as replays rolled.

“But you see what I’m talking about — when McFadden leaves the track it takes what seems like an eternity for him to hit the ground again.”

Rubbing salt into the wounds for McFadden, his early pace went unmatched with his best lap remaining the fastest of the race.

Sweet also went on to win.

McFadden spent the past three American seasons racing in World of Outlaws but switched to the breakaway High Limit Racing series this year.

High Limit Racing is co-owned by Sweet and NASCAR champion Kyle Larson.
