Vice President Kamala Harris responded for the first time to critics who “love to talk about the way I laugh” when talk show host Drew Barrymore asked what it’s like to be the first woman VP.
VP Harris sat for an exclusive interview that will air in full on Monday’s edition of The Drew Barrymore Show, but brought up the laugh issue in a preview clip obtained by Mediaite.
THE VICE PRESIDENT: People who will be like — you know, if you — if you trip and fall, they’ll laugh with you, but then they’ll pick you back up and push you back out there. You know, I — that’s really important.
And I think we — you know, when we talk about our power and the — you know, I believe one should try to never let anybody take your power from you. (Applause.) And that includes knowing what is in your power to do and being intentional about it.
And then, you know, you were asking me earlier about what it means to be, like, the first woman. And, you know, it’s funny, because people still got to get used to this, right? I mean, my staff, for example, sometimes they’ll show me little things that just amuse me. Like, apparently, some people love to talk about the way I laugh.
DREW BARRYMORE: Oh, yes.
THE VICE PRESIDENT: Okay.
DREW BARRYMORE: I love your laugh.
THE VICE PRESIDENT: Well, let me just tell you something. I have my mother’s laugh. And I grew up around a bunch of women, in particular, who laughed from the belly. They laughed. They would sit around the kitchen and — drinking their coffee, telling big stories with big laughs.
I be- — you know, I’m never going to be — (the Vice President imitates high-pitched laugh) — that’s just — (laughter) — that is just — I’m not that person.
And I think it’s really important for us to remind each other and — and our younger ones: Don’t be confined to other people’s perception about what this looks like and who you sh- — how you should act in order to be. Right? It’s really important. It’s — it’s important. (Applause.)
DREW BARRYMORE: I love your laugh. And I love that message.
