Major update on Rangers hero Walter Smith statue with location revealed as Gers formally bid for planning permission

RANGERS have officially submitted planning permission to Glasgow City Council to build a statue in honour of former manager, Walter Smith.

The Ibrox club revealed plans to pay tribute to the legendary boss back in October 2022, on the first anniversary of his death.

Smith, who managed Scotland and Everton as well as Rangers, passed away in October 2021 at the age of 73.

He won 21 trophies across two spells as Gers manager, including 10 top flight titles, and his team reached the final of the Uefa Cup in 2007-08.

While Rangers have named two stands after club legends in Bill Struth and Sandy Jardine, the only current statue at the ground is of the Greatest Ever Ranger, ex-captain and manager John Greig.

It is situated at the corner of the Copland Road and Bill Struth Main Stands.

It will soon be accompanied by a monument to Smith but at another part of the ground.

The Ibrox club have now formally lodged a planning application for the construction with the local council, revealing their preferred location for the sculpture.

Planning documents show that the new statue will be built on a space of land between the Copland Road stand and New Edmiston House.

The statue is of course yet to be unveiled and the hope is that it will be ready later in the year.

Chief executive James Bisgrove said at a fan Q&A at Edmiston House last year: “The Walter Smith statue will be unveiled in the New Year and will be a special moment for the club.”

Rangers expect a decision from Glasgow City Council by Friday, June 14.

When they first announced plans to commemorate Smith in this way, Rangers said: “On the first anniversary of his passing, Rangers Football Club are today pleased to announce a statue of legendary manager Walter Smith has been commissioned to commemorate his incredible achievements at the club.”

Smith first took charge of the Light Blues in April 1991, stepping up from the position of No2 to Graeme Souness when he left for Liverpool.

He also had a brief spell at Manchester United working under Sir Alex Ferguson in between his stints at Everton and Scotland before returning to Rangers in 2007.
