Man arrested after allegedly shooting up remote pub, threatening staff

A man has been arrested after allegedly threatening staff before allegedly shooting up a pub in remote Western Australia.

Police were called to the licensed premises in Mogumbar, about 120km north of Perth, after reports of an altercation.

Officers allege the 41-year-old entered the pub about 8.30pm on Friday armed with a rifle before threatening three staff members.

The man allegedly fired a single round into the ground before threatening and assaulting a fourth staff member who attempted to intervene.

The man left the scene before a number of police units, including the Tactical Response Group and the Police Air Wing.

Following an investigation, specialist police arrested the man at an address in New Norcia and charged him with 17 offences.

The charges include three counts of threatening to kill, aggravated burglary, criminal damage, common assault, and re-entering a licensed premises.

The men also faces a string of firearm-related offences, including unlicensed person possessing a firearm and ammunition and pointing a firearm at another person.

He is due to appear before Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday.

In a statement to their Facebook, The Mogumber Hub would “be closed until further notice, following the incident of a gunman entering our establishment on Friday”.

“The welfare of the staff and our patrons is our top priority, and the management team will do everything we can to support them during this time,” it said.

“We praise the heroic actions of community members who helped protect our staff and fellow patrons during the tense situation.

“Thank you to the West Australian Police Force who rapidly attended to the incident.

According to their website, The Mogumber Hub is a community owned, not-for-profit venue.

“Volunteers have worked hard to create the Hub of our community where locals can gather and socialise,” the statement said.

“This isolated and unusual incident has shocked us. Mogumber is a resilient community and we support each other.

“Our collective strength will ensure the Mogumber Hub reopens so we can once again be together.”
