Manny Machado Tries and Fails to Break Bat Over Knee

San Diego Padres designated hitter Manny Machado tried to do his best Bo Jackson impression during his team’s home opener on Thursday, only to be thwarted by the structural integrity of his bat.

The Padres hosted the San Francisco Giants after opening the regular season last week with two games against the Los Angeles Dodgers in South Korea.

With his team leading 2-1 in the bottom of the 6th, Machado popped out to second base. While walking back to the dugout, he tried to break his bat in half.

Giants broadcasters Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow noticed Machado’s frustration and remarked that the Padres star just likely gave himself a solid bruise.

“Manny Machado tried to do the Chili Davis and it didn’t work,” said Kuiper. “That hurts!”

“You can see the aggravation for Machado as he puts a bruise on his thigh,” Krukow responded. “Only Chili Davis could break it. And Bo Jackson.”

“I think Bo Jackson did it without using his legs,” Kuiper joked.

“Yeah, he did it on his head,” Krukow added, noting an actual thing that the former Kansas City Royal did in a game in 1989, though the bat was already cracked after a groundout.

The Padres are looking to bounce back from a woefully disappointing season in which they failed to make the playoffs after splurging the previous offseason. Last year, they finished just 82-80 and missed the postseason.

San Diego won the game 6-4.
