In a new interview with People, the actress said that because of “the way my marriage was” she felt “it was not fair to bring a kid to this world”.

She said her husband had always wanted children but she never felt like it was the right time.

“There’s things in life that might sound like good ideas, but they’re not,” she said.

“I was a mother already,” she added, referring to her now 32-year-old son Manolo from her first marriage to Joe Gonzalez.

“I know what it means to be a good mother, or to try to be the best mother that you can, and that takes a lot of sacrifices, takes a lot of energy.

“I totally respect where anyone wants to be a mom after 50.

“I didn’t think because of my career, the way I live my life, the way my marriage was, that it was fair to bring a kid to this world, and I’m not going to be able to give 100 per cent.”

Vergara admitted that part of the reason for their breakup was the fact Manganiello wanted children but she did not.

She said she had a great relationship with her son and that was enough for her.

“It is great that I had him young, because now I’m going to be 52, and he’s 32,” she said.

“I wish I was older sometimes, because I would have been more mature, more prepared to be a mother, but that was what I got and what happened.

“So I just kept going and try not to look back at it, because it is what it is.

“But it is fun because I kind of grew up together with my son.”

Vergara hadn’t quite turned 20 when she had Manolo.

“It happened to me very, very young,” she said.

“I was not even 20 years old, so I don’t even remember that much of my life without being a mother.

Vergara and Manganiello announced they were calling it quits in July 2023.

“We have made the difficult decision to divorce,” the pair said in a statement to Page Six.

“As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives.”

A source told the outlet: “Sofia and Joe have been growing apart for a while now and are taking some distance from each other to contemplate their future.”

Vergara was 18 when she married her first husband, highschool sweetheart Joe Gonzalez.

Manolo was born in Colombia in September 1991 but the couple divorced two years later, in 1995.

Vergara and American actor Nick Loeb became engaged in 2012 after dating for two years, but in May 2014 Vergara announced that the engagement had been called off.
