Netflix buys rights to novel Meet Me At The Lake for Harry and Meghan to produce under Archewell Productions

Netflix has bought the film rights to a romantic novel for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to produce, it was claimed yesterday.

It was initially reported that Harry and Meghan bought the rights to Meet Me At The Lake, which has a plotline that echoes the pair’s own lives.

But sources told celebrity website Page Six this was not the case.

“Instead, Netflix purchased it for them to produce under their Archewell Productions arm,” reported the site.

The rights are believed to be worth around $3 million (£2.36million).

An insider said the book was “right up their alley”.

Sources added that former actress Meghan has “big plans for Hollywood domination – but doesn’t want to act or direct any more.”

But she was said to be teaming up with Harry to produce Meet Me At The Lake, written by former journalist Carley Fortune, as part of their multi-million-dollar deal with Netflix which has reportedly been under threat.

The book tells the story of a couple who rekindle a romance in their early 30s and “come together when they need each other most”.

It deals with mental health issues and grief over the death of a parent in a car accident.

Harry lost his mother Princess Diana in a crash in Paris, while Meghan, 42, revealed she suffered depression following the birth of son Archie.

Protagonist Fern Brookbanks comes from a “broken home”, as do Harry and Meghan, and the book contains “steamy sex scenes” and “drug use”.

Harry, 38, confessed to using cannabis and cocaine in his memoir Spare.

The novel is set in Toronto, Canada, where Ms Fortune lives – as did Meghan while filming the TV series Suits.

Meet Me At The Lake is published by Penguin Random House US, which also published Spare.

It is Ms Fortune’s second book and debuted at No1 on the New York Times bestseller list in May.

Ms Fortune told The Independent: “I’m so thrilled about working with Netflix and Archewell to bring Meet Me At The Lake to the screen. Will and Fern’s love story is dear to my heart, and I can’t imagine a more perfect partnership.”

In June, Spotify axed a $35 million (£18 million) deal with the couple after just one series of Meghan’s podcast prompted talent agent Jeremy Zimmer to say she “was not a great audio talent, or necessarily any kind of talent”.

Spokesmen for Harry and Meghan, Netflix, and Ms Fortune did not respond to a request for comment last night.
