MUMBAI: The ‘One State, One Uniform’ policy will be implemented in all government schools in Maharashtra from the academic year 2024-25.
The standardised uniforms for class 1 to 8 could not take off this academic year as many schools were ready with their own uniforms when they reopened in June.
The state’s identical attire will be on the lines of a scout and guide uniform. Students will get two sets of uniforms. One of the two uniform will have shoulder strips and double pockets.
In a government resolution issued on Wednesday, the state said all students should get their identical uniforms on the first day of the next academic year.
Male students will have sky blue shirts and dark sky blue half/ full pants. Female students will have sky blue shirts and dark sky blue skirts or salwars. The uniforms will be switched by womens help groups.
Over two decades ago, state government schools had identical uniforms. Later schools were given funds and allowed to choose their uniforms. In rural areas, clusters of several schools have similar uniforms.
As of now the government spends Rs 600 per student on uniforms. School Management Committees (SMCs) decide on the uniforms and gets it stitched from vendors. The uniform policy does not apply to private schools.
This year Rs 75.60 crore was earmarked for free uniforms. The state released Rs 300 per student to procure one set of uniforms in May. Funds for the second set of uniforms were released in June after schools reopened.
