Police officer who fatally shot Eddie Irizarry faces murder, other charges

CNN – The Philadelphia district attorney has charged the police officer who shot and killed Eddie Irizarry during a traffic stop with murder. Body camera footage of the encounter, described as “extremely violent,” was released, showing Officer Mark Dial firing into Irizarry’s car through the rolled-up driver’s side window. Prior to the officer firing his weapon, an unidentified voice is heard saying, “I will f**king shoot you!” Irizarry was then pulled from the car, bloodied and unresponsive, and taken to the hospital. Dial has also been charged with voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment, and official oppression. His bail was set at $500,000. Defense attorneys argue that Dial was justified in firing his weapon because he believed Irizarry had a gun. However, the released video footage does not show Irizarry with a weapon. Irizarry’s family and their attorneys claim that the use of deadly force was unnecessary and that Irizarry posed no threat to the officers. The shooting is currently under investigation, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 26.
