Port Hedland blaze: Emergency warning for Pilbara town with threat to lives and homes

A bushfire emergency is unfolding in WA’s north.

People in Boodarie, about 15km south-west of Port Hedland, are being urged to evacuate as an unpredictable blaze takes hold.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued the warning just before 11am, telling those on or near Greenfields Street in Boodarie they are “in danger and need to act immediately to survive”.

Firefighters are on the scene, battling the out-of-control blaze.

“There is a threat to lives and homes,” the emergency alert said.

“Homes in Greenfields Street are under threat by fire now.

“If you are not at home, it’s too dangerous to return.”

Yarrie Road and Quartz Quarry Road have been closed.

People are advised to leave north on Yarrie Road towards South Hedland if it is safe to do so.

A member of the public first reported the blaze via a triple zero call about 9.35am on Saturday.

There are seven firefighting ground crews attending the area, which include local volunteers and members of brigades from Port and South Hedland.

WHAT TO DO:

  • If the way is clear, leave now for a safer place.
  • Do not wait and see, leaving at the last minute could put your life in danger.
  • Close all doors and windows and turn off evaporative air conditioners, but keep water running through the system if possible.
  • If you cannot leave, you need to get ready to shelter in your home.
  • Go to a room in your home away from the fire front and make sure you can easily escape.
  • Choose a room with two exits and water such as a kitchen or laundry.
