Prince Harry’s tears during UK visit as he fails to see King Charles

Prince Harry was visibly moved during an emotional moment at a service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral in London to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games on Wednesday.

Harry, 39, returned to Britain from his Californian home this week to attend events to celebrate the milestone for the international sporting event he founded in 2014 to give injured or sick military personnel and veterans the chance to compete, similar to the Paralympics.

During the service, the Duke of Sussex was visibly moved as he listened to the 2018 Team UK captain Michelle Turner discuss the profound impact the service has had on her family’s life.

Harry rose to his feet to lead a standing ovation after Turner thanked “Invictus for giving me my life back”.

He appeared to be in tears, live coverage of the service by the BBC showed.

During the service, Harry delivered a Bible reading from Corinthians, emphasising the way different people have different gifts and strengths, the BBC reported.

Two of Harry’s family members made a surprise visit to the service, with Earl Charles Spencer and Lady Jane Fellowes, the brother and sister of the late Princess Diana in attendance.

Harry’s uncle and aunt were spotted in the second row of St Paul’s.

The Duke, who sat in the row ahead, swerved around when he spotted his late mother’s siblings and was all smiles as he spoke with them.

The wife of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Akshata Murty, also attended the service.

There was plenty of support for the prince as crowds gathered outside to greet or catch a glimpse of him.

However, no other royals were in attendance supporting Harry through the service, with the Duke’s wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex remaining in the US with their two children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 2.

Meghan has not returned to the UK since the funeral of Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth in September 2022.

The family relocated to the US state of California after stepping back as senior working royals in January 2020 and have been caught up in various claims and counter claims about their treatment by other royals ever since.

A spokesperson for Harry confirmed as the Duke touched down in the UK on May 7 that he would not be reuniting with his father King Charles during the visit.

“It unfortunately will not be possible due to His Majesty’s full program,” the spokesperson told The Mirror.

“The Duke, of course, is understanding of his father’s diary of commitments and various other priorities and hopes to see him soon.”

On the day of Harry’s arrival, King Charles was spotted leaving Windsor Castle. The monarch has only recently returned to public duties after stepping back to undergo cancer treatment.

Harry returned to the UK to visit him soon after Charles announced in February that he had been diagnosed with a form of cancer, however the pair have not cuaght up since.

While Harry was at St Paul’s Cathedral, King Charles and Queen Camilla were just 3km down the road at Buckingham Palace.

They received guests at The Sovereign’s Garden Party.
