Samsung releases urgent update for ‘critical security vulnerability’

Samsung has released an urgent update for “critical security vulnerability” fixes that should be installed by users as soon as possible, according to the tech giant.

Samsung has released information for its May security patch for its flagship Galaxy smartphones and tablets, with some labelled as “critical”.

“Along with Google patches, Samsung Mobile provides 25 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items, to improve our customer’s confidence on security of Samsung mobile devices,” Samsung said.

Samsung security index (SSI), found in ‘Security software version’, SMR May-2024 Release 1 includes all patches from Samsung and Google. Some of the SVE items may not be included in this package, in case these items were already included in a previous maintenance release.”

A critical fix that Google had included in its April security release, is only just being made available by Samsung — the modem issue could potentially lead to a corruption in device memory during an exchange of information with another device, also known as a “handshake”.

Such memory vulnerabilities are warned as possible means of exploitation.

Galaxy users will see updates made available in coming days and are advised to ensure their device updates as soon as the release for their model is made available.
