Samsung to launch mirrorless smart camera on June 20th: Report

Samsung launched its Android-powered Galaxy Camera last year and looks like it is getting ready to release its successor.

According to a report in The Korea Times, Samsung is slated to launch the Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 at its “Samsung Premiere” press event on June 20th. Amidst other Galaxy and Ativ devices that are set to be unveiled, the event will also showcase the successor to Samsung’s Android based Galaxy Camera, the report states. The statement comes from none other than Samsung’s CEO Shin Jong-kyun. He said that Samsung would be launching its latest mirrorless camera that runs on Google’s Android software.

Now that we look at the press invite issued for June 20th again, Samsung has actually teased consumers with the presence of a zoom ring. Perhaps, the Galaxy Camera 2 is what Samsung has been hinting at.

A mirrorless camera works like a camera-hybrid by offering professional results like a DSLR in the size of a compact digital camera. Other prospective aspects to the smart camera can be the lens system on the device. Since a mirrorless camera can work with both an interchangeable lens system and a fixed lens, we do not know as of now with way the device will be going. If Samsung plans to launch the device with an interchangeable lens, it would perhaps be an interesting device for professional users. A fixed lens system without the ability to zoom does not seem like a prospect that Samsung could be aiming at. Along the same idea, Polaroid had launched a smart camera with an interchangeable lens at CES 2013. That camera however isn’t available for purchase yet.

With all other devices rumoured to be launched at the June 20th event already announced, a new smart camera actually makes a lot of sense. Samsung recently announced its additional members in the Galaxy S4 series with the Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S4 Active and the Galaxy S4 Zoom. Galaxy S4 Zoom here is a camera-focused smartphone from the Korean giant. The smartphone camera hybrid comes with a 16-megapixel shooter, Xenon flash and 10X optical zoom. With a mirrorless smart camera and a smartphone-camera from the company both approaching the market, it seems that Samsung is working on capturing the ‘smart camera’ segment.
