San Jose State lands QB Chubba Purdy, brother of 49ers’ Brock Purdy

Make room for another Purdy.

Chubba Purdy, the younger brother of 49ers’ quarterback Brock Purdy, announced on X (formerly Twitter) Sunday he has committed to transfer to San Jose State.

Purdy spent two seasons at Nebraska after initially playing at Florida State. He has two years of eligibility remaining after completing 53 of 105 passes for 529 yards in 12 games in 2022-23 for the Cornhuskers.

The younger Purdy also was extended scholarship offers from Cal and North Texas State, according to his “X” feed. He backed up Brock for two seasons at Perry High in Gilbert, Arizona. As a junior, Chubba Purdy passed for 3,425 yards and 36 touchdowns and rushed for 1,152 yards and 23 touchdowns. He finished with 45,423 yards total offense and 52 touchdowns as a senior.

At 6-foot-2, 217 pounds, Chubba Purdy was recruited more heavily than his brother out of high school. He initially committed to Louisville before flipping to Florida State.

Purdy’s given name is Preston, but he was given the nickname Chubba as a 38-pound 1-year-old and the name stuck.

San Jose State will have a new starting quarterback in 2024 after Chevan Cordero’s eligibility expired.
