Savea: ‘I watched him when I was a kid’

The Springboks are set to be a formidable force in the upcoming Rugby Championship, according to All Blacks star loose forward Ardie Savea.

With the addition of Tony Brown and Jerry Flannery to their coaching team, the Springboks are expected to bring a new level of intensity and strategy to the field.

Springboks Bolster Coaching Team

Under the leadership of head coach Rassie Erasmus, the Springboks have made significant changes to their coaching staff as they embark on a new World Cup cycle.

Former All Blacks flyhalf Tony Brown will take charge of the Springboks’ attacking game, while Jerry Flannery has been appointed as the new defence coach.

These additions have caught the attention of the rugby world, including Savea, who believes the Springboks will be a “different beast but in a scarier way.”

All Blacks Prepare for Fierce Competition

The All Blacks will face the Springboks twice in South Africa during this year’s Rugby Championship. The first encounter will take place on August 31 in Johannesburg, followed by a second Test in Cape Town on 7 September.

Savea, who is currently playing for Kobe Steelers in Japan Rugby League One, acknowledges the challenge that lies ahead for the All Blacks.

“I have a sense that they want to do great things and leave a legacy,” Savea said of the Springboks. “They want to back that up with the way they play.”

Springboks’ Legendary Loose Forward Retires

While the Springboks will be without the services of legendary loose forward Duane Vermeulen, who announced his retirement after last year’s World Cup, Savea believes there are plenty of talented players ready to fill his shoes. Vermeulen has been appointed to a roving coaching role with all SA Rugby’s national teams, but his absence on the field will be felt.

“I am a massive fan of Duane. I watched him when I was a kid,” Savea said. “For him not to be there is huge, but they have other world-class loosies.”

All Blacks Undergo Coaching Changes

The All Blacks will also enter the series with a new coaching team, led by Scott Robertson. Savea has had minimal conversations with Robertson so far, mainly focusing on feedback on his game and areas for improvement.

As the rugby world eagerly awaits the clash between these two powerhouse teams, Savea’s warning serves as a reminder of the fierce competition that lies ahead. With both sides undergoing significant changes in their coaching staff, the stage is set for an epic battle in the Rugby Championship.
