The Planet Earth series, which has been on air since 2006, has had a shake-up to celebrate Earth Day — with 50 children recording the narration instead of Attenborough.

Planet Earth III: Narrated By Kids represents children speaking up for the planet, incorporating children from select schools who have been involved in fundraising efforts for BBC Children In Need.

The episode starts with an introduction from the children, aged between nine and 13, Metro UK reports.

“Welcome to a very special episode of Planet Earth III, narrated by schoolchildren from all over the UK,” the introduction reads.

“Because you don’t have to be Sir David Attenborough to become a voice for nature.

“We can all speak up on behalf of our wonderful planet earth. It’s one of the most powerful ways to help protect it.”

Earth Day this year was on April 22.

The Planet Earth episode voiced by the children is set to air on BBC One on May 6.

Attenborough is best known for his work in writing and narrating countless nature documentaries, most famously the Life on Earth and Planet Earth series.

In recent years, his work has addressed issues around the Earth’s future; in the recent Netflix series Our Planet, he said failure to “act on climate change could lead to the collapse of our societies”.
