Son faces court charged with murdering elderly mum

A man charged with murdering his mother, whose body was found at a home in Perth’s south, has faced court for the first time.

Andre Lafayette Drane, 54, appeared in Fremantle Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with murdering 78-year-old Joan Mary Drane at a Yangebup property between Saturday and Monday.

Mr Drane was not required to enter a plea, nor was bail considered.

He was remanded in custody to face Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on May 29.

Neighbours have expressed shock over Ms Drane’s death, with some leaving flowers at the scene.

Forensics officers were seen taking photographs both inside and outside the home on Monday.

WA Premier Roger Cook told reporters it was an “incredibly traumatic event”.

“I understand it is a very complex situation with regards to the people involved,” he said.

“It is a very complex matter and I’m very pleased that police are on the ground to make sure that they can reassure other members of the public in that area that they are not in any extra danger.

“The police have taken someone into custody and I understand that person has been charged, and we’ll allow the courts to now process that particular charge.”
