Stephanie Lake’s electric circle with Australian Ballet

Acclaimed choreographer Stephanie Lake is preparing for the world premiere of her first full-length commission with the Australian Ballet.

Circle Electric will premiere at the Sydney Opera House with a score by Robin Fox that blends an acoustic and electronic soundtrack with live orchestral music.

“Stephanie’s revolutionary use of music, pattern and shape is unlike anything our company has performed before,” said Australian Ballet artistic director David Hallberg.

The ambitious dance is designed to offer a view of humanity from a distance before zooming in for microscopic close-ups, exploring its simultaneous insignificance and importance.

It’s being performed alongside Harald Lander’s classic ballet Etudes, which the company is dancing for the first time in a decade.

Lake joined the Australian Ballet as a resident choreographer in January with Alice Topp stepping aside at the end of 2023 after five years.

Lake’s own company of dancers is taking her previous work Manifesto to Spain and France in May, while her work for 50 dancers Colossus has recently finished a run in Brisbane.

* Etudes/Circle Electric is at the Sydney Opera House from May 3-18 and the Regent Theatre in Melbourne from October 2.
